These are three of the wooden handled utensils I have picked up recently to use in my kitchen. Wooden handled utensils were doomed when dishwashers became common. Those with the finish intact are collectible, and those with less than perfect paint jobs are everywhere. With one rattle can you can spruce up a lot of utensils and as long as it doesn’t go near a dishwasher, you will have a smile on your face.

First your strip off what’s left, then sand and prep the handle, tape up everything you don’t want to be red, and then fire away. For a good finish, the 1st coat will look a little rough and see through, the next one will cover that one well enough not to see the original surface. When dry, sand them smooth with very fine steel wool. Then you add a nice smooth third and possibly fourth coat. Finishing up with a couple of coats of a clear gloss.
I also add brass eyes to any of the utensils I want to hang up.
